We focused on whether white button mushrooms could help lower cholesterol levels and blood sugar in rats. In our study, we found that after three weeks of the mushroom powder, diabetic rats showed significant drops in glucose and triglyceride levels.
Furthermore, in hypercholesterolemic rats, a four-week treatment led to impressive reductions in total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol. Overall, these findings suggest that white button mushrooms may have beneficial effects on cholesterol and blood sugar management, at least in rat models.

Secholex lowers cholesterol moderately
Treatment of hypercholesterolemia with Secholex. A long-term clinical trial and comparison with cholestyramine.
We examined the effects of Secholex, an anion-exchange gel, on high cholesterol in 46 patients with severe hyperlipoproteinemia over various studies. The results revealed that Secholex effectively lowered cholesterol levels, achieving a 15% reduction after the first year and 13% during the second year. While it was less effective than cholestyramine in increasing bile acid excretion, many patients preferred Secholex. However, it’s important to note that a third of patients experienced limited reductions in cholesterol, indicating varying responses.

PIB lowers cholesterol levels
[Value and limits of bypassing the distal ileum in the treatment of hypercholesterolemia].
We explored the effects of partial ileal bypass (PIB) on cholesterol levels in a small group of young adults with hyperlipidemia. After the surgical procedure, participants received vitamin B12 injections twice monthly.
Impressively, total plasma cholesterol levels decreased significantly three months after surgery and remained lower after one year. However, while PIB helped normalize cholesterol, it didn't completely prevent the progression of atherosclerosis in some patients. This indicates that while B12 treatment benefited cholesterol levels, it wasn't a cure-all for other cardiovascular issues we studied.

Neuralgia improved
6 people found this helpful
The effect on improving neuralgia is remarkable! I recently overcame shingles, but the neuralgia persisted. I found this vitamin B12 without magnesium stearate or silicon dioxide. After over a month of taking it, the discomfort from the neuralgia has significantly improved.
We explored how a specific dietary supplement that includes Vitamin B12 affects cholesterol levels in individuals with moderate high cholesterol. In our study, 80 participants were split into a treatment group and a control group.
After 6 months, the group taking the supplement experienced a notable drop in total cholesterol (TC) and improvements in other cholesterol types, while the control group showed no significant changes outside of TC reduction.
This suggests that, while a healthy diet and exercise can help, the addition of such supplements, including Vitamin B12, may enhance cholesterol management more effectively.

B vitamins reduce homocysteine levels
[Effect of the supplementation of vitamins B12, B6 and folic acid on homocysteine and plasmatic lipids in patients with hyperlipoproteinemic secondary type IV].
We explored the effects of vitamins B12, B6, and folic acid on cholesterol and homocysteine levels in 24 male patients with high triglycerides and cholesterol issues. Over 120 days, patients took specific doses of these vitamins while researchers measured their lipid and homocysteine levels at various intervals.
While we saw a notable decrease in homocysteine levels and triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) did increase slightly. However, overall cholesterol levels did not significantly change.
This suggests that while vitamin B supplementation can affect certain lipids and lower homocysteine, it may not drastically alter cholesterol levels in these patients.

Fortified juice reduces LDL cholesterol
Plant sterol-fortified orange juice effectively lowers cholesterol levels in mildly hypercholesterolemic healthy individuals.
We explored how adding plant sterols to orange juice can impact cholesterol levels in mildly hypercholesterolemic individuals. In this study, 72 healthy participants enjoyed either regular orange juice or a fortified version for eight weeks.
Those drinking the fortified juice saw a decrease in total cholesterol by 7.2%, LDL cholesterol by 12.4%, and non-HDL cholesterol by 7.8%. However, we found no changes in HDL cholesterol or triglyceride levels. The results suggest that plant sterol-fortified orange juice can be a simple addition to a cholesterol-lowering diet.

High cholesterol, or hyperlipidemia, is a medical condition characterized by an elevated level of cholesterol in the bloodstream. Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance that’s essential for building healthy cells, but too much of it can lead to serious health issues, including heart disease and stroke. Cholesterol is carried through the blood by lipoproteins, with two main types being low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL). LDL, often referred to as "bad" cholesterol, can lead to the buildup of plaque in the arteries, while HDL, known as "good" cholesterol, helps carry cholesterol away from the arteries and back to the liver.
Factors contributing to high cholesterol can include poor diet, lack of exercise, obesity, smoking, and genetic predisposition. Regular health screenings are crucial, as high cholesterol often presents no overt symptoms. Maintaining a heart-healthy diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats, coupled with regular physical activity and avoiding tobacco, can help manage cholesterol levels effectively. In some cases, medications may be necessary to control high cholesterol, so consulting with a healthcare provider is key for tailored advice.
Vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin, is a water-soluble vitamin that plays a crucial role in several vital functions in the human body. It is essential for red blood cell formation, neurological function, and DNA synthesis. Naturally occurring in animal products, the vitamin can be found in high concentrations in meat, fish, eggs, and dairy, making it particularly important for those following a vegetarian or vegan diet, as plant-based sources of B12 are limited and often require supplementation.
A deficiency in vitamin B12 can lead to serious health issues, including anemia, fatigue, memory problems, and nerve damage. Due to its significance, it's crucial for individuals, particularly those at risk of deficiency, to ensure adequate intake through diet or supplementation. For most adults, the recommended daily allowance (RDA) is around 2.4 micrograms, though pregnant or breastfeeding women may require higher amounts. If you're considering B12 supplements, it's advisable to consult with a healthcare provider to determine the best option for your specific needs and health status.
Based on user reviews, many individuals report noticeable improvements in their health after starting vitamin B12 supplements for issues related to high cholesterol and other conditions. Some users mentioned experiencing benefits within a few days to a week of starting the supplement. For example, one reviewer stated that they noticed improvements in their back pain and energy levels after just a week of use Read Review. Another user reported significant relief from numbness by the third day of taking the capsules Read Review.
However, it’s worth noting that other users found improvements took longer, suggesting that consistent use over time is essential for optimal results. For instance, a reviewer noted that after a month of use, they experienced significant improvement in discomfort from neuralgia due to shingles Read Review. In summary, while initial benefits can be observed quite quickly, many users advocate for a longer-term commitment to the supplement to achieve sustained improvements.
Evidence from multiple studies suggests that certain dietary supplements can effectively support cholesterol management. For instance, a multi-ingredient supplement incorporating red yeast rice and omega-3 fatty acids led to significant reductions in total and LDL cholesterol levels, indicating its potential effectiveness in cholesterol control [2]. Moreover, a separate study focusing on a specific Vitamin B12 supplement found a notable decrease in total cholesterol among participants after six months, highlighting the potential of B12 in cholesterol management [3].
Additionally, plant-based dietary strategies, including one featuring a whole food plant-based diet, demonstrated that cholesterol levels could be favorably impacted over extended periods, although initial results at six months were less conclusive [1]. It's essential to note that while supplements can contribute positively to cholesterol management, they often work best in conjunction with broader dietary and lifestyle changes.
Based on user reviews, many individuals report significant improvements in symptoms after starting vitamin B12 supplementation. Several users have noted enhanced energy levels, with one reviewer expressing a marked increase in activity and eradication of fatigue shortly after beginning the regimen Read Review. Other users suffering from conditions such as cerebral infarctions and neuralgia reported improvements in dizziness and pain relief; for example, a user shared that their father's lightheadedness had significantly decreased Read Review and another found substantial relief from post-herpetic neuralgia Read Review.
Additionally, many users experiencing numbness in their extremities have reported near-complete disappearance of these symptoms after consistent use; one individual indicated that their severe numbness in fingers and feet was markedly reduced Read Review. However, it's essential to note that individual results can vary, and while some experienced improvements within a week or two Read Review, others saw benefits accumulate over a month or longer Read Review. As with any supplement, it is suggested to consult with a healthcare professional to evaluate personal needs and expected results.
Based on user reviews, many individuals have experimented with combining vitamin B12 supplements alongside other supplements to manage high cholesterol and related health issues. For instance, one user mentioned using iron supplements for anemia in conjunction with B12, noting improvement in back pain after making this combination Read Review. Another reviewer highlighted the importance of B12 in mitigating side effects associated with diabetes and cholesterol medications, suggesting that it can be beneficial when taken alongside other drugs Read Review.
Users generally report positive experiences when combining vitamin B12 with other nutrients, particularly in addressing symptoms related to nerve issues and energy levels, both of which can be affected by high cholesterol. For example, one individual noticed significant alleviation of symptoms after combining vitamin B12 with a well-rounded diet Read Review. This suggests that for those managing cholesterol levels, using B12 alongside complementary supplements could enhance overall health benefits. However, it is always advisable for users to consult healthcare professionals before starting any combination of supplements.
Users report varying experiences regarding the right dosage of B12 for managing high cholesterol. One review suggests that vitamin B12 can help normalize blood cholesterol levels and improve overall health, linking it to reducing homocysteine levels, which is a risk factor for heart disease Read Review. Another user, who experienced a significant improvement in blood tests after consistent use, encourages others to monitor their B12 levels, especially in conjunction with medications for cholesterol Read Review.
However, some users caution against high doses. One review noted that while the supplement elevated B12 levels effectively, it also led to mild acne breakouts at higher doses. Consequently, the user found a frequency of 2-3 times a week to be more effective and recommended consulting a doctor for personalized dosing Read Review. Overall, while users express positive results from vitamin B12 in improving health and possibly aiding in cholesterol management, they emphasize the necessity of adjusting doses based on individual responses and professional guidance.

WFPB diet may aid cholesterol
The BROAD study: A randomised controlled trial using a whole food plant-based diet in the community for obesity, ischaemic heart disease or diabetes.
We investigated the impact of a whole food plant-based (WFPB) diet on cholesterol levels and body weight in a community setting. Participants followed this diet along with vitamin B supplementation and attended meetings over 12 weeks.
While we observed considerable weight loss in the WFPB group, the cholesterol reduction wasn't significantly different from standard care at six months, unless we excluded dropouts. However, at twelve months, we did see meaningful reductions in both BMI and cholesterol levels for the WFPB diet group.
Overall, the initiative showed promise for improving health without restricting energy intake or mandating exercise.
